To the Romans of the 1st Century BC, Britain was a semi-mythical land beyond the seas, populated by barbarous, war-like tribespeople known as the Pretani or Britons. Thanks to Caesar’s book, the invasions have been described as the first recorded events in the entire history of the British Isles. But until the Roman landing place in 54 BC was identified near a beach in the southeast of England, there was no archaeological evidence for Caesar’s invasions. University of Leicester In and , archaeologists from the University of Leicester in the UK excavated parts of a Roman military fort dating from the 1st Century BC, near the village of Ebbsfleet along the shore of Pegwell Bay, on the Isle of Thanet at the north-east tip of the county of Kent.
A defensive ditch from the fort was first discovered in , by archaeologists who excavated the area as part of local government requirements before a new road was built there. The remains of Roman weapons found at the site and clues about the local landscape in Caesar’s Commentaries show the fort was built by the Romans to keep watch over the hundreds of ships of their invasion fleet at anchor in Pegwell Bay, the researchers say. Romans in the UK Credit: University of Leicester In his Commentaries, Caesar — at that time the Roman general in command of the province of Gaul, in modern France and Belgium — described leading two invasions of Britain.
In the first, which historians date to 55 BC, Caesar invaded with two legions of infantry and fought the British for 10 weeks in the eastern parts of Kent, before retiring his troops to Gaul for the winter.

Multiple coverage across the world’s major outlets, including top billing on the BBC and the front page of the New York Times, demonstrated the interest in the story. It was the head wound on the skull that killed him. Richard III, the last Plantagenet, was the only king since the Norman Conquest whose mortal whereabouts were unknown and who was not buried in a royal tomb. The discovery was akin to hunting for the proverbial needle in a haystack and pulling out the needle on the first reach. It all happened late last summer, when a team from the University of Leicester dug three exploratory trenches in a local council car park within sight of Leicester Cathedral.
It was here that the battle-scarred, abused and naked body of the dead king had been unceremoniously carried in the aftermath of the Battle of Bosworth Field. The Tudor victors wanted the carcass of the king disposed of quietly and surreptitiously, if respectfully. Appropriately, the friars buried the king in the chancel of the friary church.
Over the centuries, a growing Leicester built and rebuilt over the site, and its location became lost in time. A few years ago it came to light that the assumed location of Greyfriars in a heavily built-up part of the city center had been wrong. It had, in fact, been located in part underneath what was a council parking lot.
In just three weeks, the excavation of the exploratory trenches had located Greyfriars, the church, the chancel and the rude tomb that has proved to be the grave of the lost monarch. When we found that Greyfriars was down by the river, we knew its precinct, but ultimately, we knew zero about the location of the friary buildings. They were understandably excited. After all, scholars and historians generally lead fairly quiet lives.

On Sept 4, , a skeleton was excavated in Leicester that was identified as Richard. We investigated the trauma to the skeleton with modern forensic techniques, such as conventional CT and micro-CT scanning, to characterise the injuries and establish the probable cause of death. Methods We assessed age and sex through direct analysis of the skeleton and from CT images.
All bones were examined under direct light and multi-spectral illumination. We then scanned the skeleton with whole-body post-mortem CT. We subsequently examined bones with identified injuries with micro-CT. We deemed that trauma was perimortem when we recorded no evidence of healing and when breakage characteristics were typical of fresh bone.
We used previous data to identify the weapons responsible for the recorded injuries. Findings The skeleton was that of an adult man with a gracile build and severe scoliosis of the thoracic spine.

At a specially convened media conference, experts from across the University unanimously identified the remains discovered in Leicester city centre as being those of the last Plantagenet king who died in Rigorous scientific investigations confirmed the strong circumstantial evidence that the skeleton found at the site of the Grey Friars church in Leicester was indeed that of King Richard III.
